Upcoming Lovecraft Games You Should Check Out

Lovecraft‘s work has been more prominent in gaming in recent years. A greater focus on cosmic horrors than typical modern horror of slashers or the supernatural. This led many game developers to Lovecraft’s classic work, him being the creator of cosmic horror. This has led to phenomenal horror games like BloodBorne, Dead Space, and Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Each game reaching outstanding success that others want to follow suit. So, I decided to put a list together of upcoming Lovecraft games you should check out.

The Sinking City

Developer: Frogware

In The Sinking City, you play as a private detective investigating the madness and corruption of the half-submerged city, Oakmont. As you piece together the mystery, madness comes closer to engulfing you and the city. The Sinking City is a cross breed of Sherlock Holmes and the Cthulhu mythos.

Developer, Frogware, has stated there will be zero hand-holding in the game. No objective marks to follow, you can approach quests in any way, question / accuse any suspect, and must check every crevice for clues / items. The atmosphere and monster designs are very creative and fit right in the Cthulhu mythos. If you want a Sherlock Holmes game, but have Lovecraft storytelling, then check out The Sinking City.

Moons of Madness

Developer: Rocket Pocket Games

A mysterious signal is picked up from Mars. Scientists, believing it to be from intelligent life, set up a secret Mars base called, Invictus. You play as Shane Newehart, a space technician to keep the lights running, but is completely unaware of the Mars base’s true intentions. However, he will soon encounter haunting visions and horrific monstrosities that will make him question the fabric of reality.

Moons of Madness is blatantly inspired by Lovecraft’s novel, At the Mountains Of Madness, but in spaaaaaaace! In all seriousness, the game looks very promising. Having a strong focus on cosmic horrors and exploration. I haven’t spotted combat so far in any of its promotional material. Moons of Madness‘ top priority is exploration, puzzle solving, and survival.

Shadow Over Isolation

Developer: Naughty Shinobi

It’s 1984 in Kapra County, Georgia. Ryan Kappel returns and is asked by his aunt to farm sit for a while. It’s been 17 years since he visited his grandparents, so feeling nostalgic he accepts her request. However, the nostalgic trip ends abruptly when he discovers a strange chamber located in the farm’s stable. After this discovery, the towns dark, sinister past start to unravel.

There is a playable demo on Steam if you want to experience it for yourself. It’s not very long, but does show to be a competent game so far. I believe the most captivating part of this is the art style. Shadow Over Isolation takes heavy inspiration from famous director, Stanley Kubrick. Giving the game a unique art style and personality.
